Built in 1913, the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market was originally Government Vegetables Market which sold fruit and vegetables. In 1965, it operated as a specialist fruit wholesaling market after all the vegetables stalls moved out. The most noticeable feature of the market is the carvings of traders’ brand names on pediments or tablets of the gables, which attracts many locals and tourists every year. It is accorded with Grade 2 Historic Buildings by HKSAR Government in 2009.
Besides its architectural merit, some wholesalers in the Fruit Market have become retailers now. The visitors are able to buy a wide variety of mouthwatering fruits at bargain prices there. It is just a 5 minutes’ walk from The Cityview.
